Best Day for Kaal Sarp Puja: How the Day and Muhurat Are Chosen
Fri, 9 October 2026 · By Pandit Ravi Guruji
No single date suits everyone. Here is how the panchang, your birth chart and practical plans come together when Guruji suggests a day for Kaal Sarp puja.
Is there one best day?
People often ask for the single best date, but tradition does not really offer one. A day that suits one family may not suit another, because the choice depends on the panchang, the person's own chart and what the family can manage.
So the more useful question is which suitable dates are open to you. Guruji can usually offer a few options rather than one fixed answer [TO VERIFY].

Days families often prefer
Some days are widely preferred for reasons of tradition:
- Nag Panchami, the festival dedicated to snakes, which falls in the month of Shravan
- Panchami tithi in general, linked with the worship of Nag deities
- Amavasya, the new moon, which many people associate with rites of this kind
- Mondays and the month of Shravan, because of their connection with Shiva
- Mahashivratri, a major day at any Shiva temple
Preferred does not mean required. These days also tend to be busier at Trimbakeshwar, and calm preparation has its own value.

How the muhurat is worked out
The panchang, the traditional Hindu almanac, describes each day through five elements: tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga and karana. A priest reads these together and looks for a time free of the combinations that custom avoids. The person's own chart may also be considered, for example the position of the Moon on that day, known as chandra bal.
This is traditional calculation, and it is normal for panchangs and priests to differ a little. Dates change every year, so please confirm them with Guruji rather than relying on a list found online.

Practical things that also count
A muhurat only helps if the family can actually be there. When choosing, think about:
- The journey to Trimbakeshwar from Nashik or further away, and reaching the night before
- Whether everyone who needs to sit for the puja can get leave at the same time
- Crowds on festival days and long weekends
- Health, especially for elderly relatives and anyone expecting a child
The rite is generally completed within a single day, though timings depend on the date [TO VERIFY].

How to ask for a date
Share your birth details, your preferred month and how flexible you can be. If you are still unsure whether the dosh applies at all, ask to have the chart checked first. The Kaal Sarp puja page explains the rite, and the Rahu Ketu puja page covers a related option.
Choosing an auspicious day is part of tradition, but no date can promise a particular outcome. When you are ready, you can send your request here.
