Rahu and Ketu are the two shadow planets, or chhaya grahas, of Vedic astrology. They have no physical body in the sky; they are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the path of the Sun. A Rahu Ketu puja Trimbakeshwar visit centres on one day of prayer and jaap for these two grahas, with your name and gotra spoken in the sankalp so that the ritual is offered on your behalf.
The Puranas trace their origin to the churning of the ocean. As the amrit was being served, the asura Svarbhanu slipped into the line of devas. The Sun and the Moon recognised him, and Lord Vishnu struck off his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. The amrit had already reached his throat, so both parts lived on: the head as Rahu and the body as Ketu.
Many people call this ritual a Rahu Ketu shanti puja. When an astrologer connects something in a kundli to these grahas, it may also be called a Rahu Ketu dosh puja. Whatever the name, the intention is the same: to pray to the grahas with respect and to ask for a steadier mind. The heart of this package is the Rahu Ketu jaap, in which the mantras of both grahas are chanted according to the vidhi.
How it differs from related pujas
- Kaal Sarp Puja is usually chosen when an astrologer reads the other seven grahas as lying between Rahu and Ketu. The Rahu-Ketu puja is addressed to these two grahas themselves.
- Maha Mrityunjay Jaap is a jaap of the mantra addressed to Lord Shiva, traditionally chosen for prayers about health and long life.
- Kumbh Vivah is a separate ritual connected with Manglik dosh and marriage matching.
