Pitra Dosh Symptoms and Remedies: What Tradition Says
Sat, 17 October 2026 · By Pandit Ravi Guruji
What people associate with Pitra Dosh, how astrologers look for it in a chart, and the traditional ways families honour their ancestors.
What Pitra Dosh means
In Hindu tradition, Pitra Dosh refers to the belief that ancestors may remain unsettled, for example when rites were missed or something in the family's past was left unresolved. It is often understood less as a punishment from ancestors and more as a debt of remembrance and gratitude that a family can honour.
Astrologers may also look for it in a birth chart, often checking the ninth house and whether the Sun or Moon is influenced by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. Views differ, and not all astrologers use the same test.

Signs people associate with it
Families who speak of Pitra Dosh usually describe something that has run through the household for a long time, such as:
- Delays in marriage or repeated setbacks at work
- Difficulties around having children
- Frequent disagreements among family members
- Money troubles that keep returning
- Dreams of departed relatives that stay clearly in memory
These are traditional associations, not a diagnosis. Such difficulties reach many families, so none of them alone shows that a dosh exists. For health, fertility or money matters, please take advice from a doctor or another qualified professional.

How to find out whether it applies
The usual starting point is a kundali check along with a conversation about family history. Guruji may ask about the rites done for departed relatives, any untimely deaths in the family and whether the annual shraddha is observed [TO VERIFY]. It is perfectly normal not to know every detail, since few families do.

Traditional remedies at home
Many remedies are simple acts of remembrance that any family can take up:
- Offering tarpan, especially on Amavasya and during Pitru Paksha
- Observing the annual shraddha on the relevant tithi
- Feeding people in need, and setting aside food for cows and crows
- Giving charity in the name of ancestors
- Caring for the elders in your family
Tradition places more value on sincerity and regular practice than on expense.

Rites performed at Trimbakeshwar
Some families choose to perform formal rites at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik. The most common are the Pitra Dosh puja and Tripindi Shraddha. Where an untimely death or another specific concern is involved, Narayan Nagbali may also be discussed. The right rite depends on your family's situation, and Guruji can talk it through with you.
These are acts of faith and respect, and no outcome can be promised. If you would like to go ahead, you can request a date here.
