What it is

A Tripindi Shraddha Trimbakeshwar ceremony is a one-day rite of remembrance in which a family offers three pindas, or ritual food offerings, for its departed relatives. The name joins "tri" (three) and "pinda" (the offering itself). Tradition connects the rite especially with ancestors of the last three generations whose yearly shraddha may have lapsed, or whose dates the family can no longer trace.

Guruji guides the family through each stage in plain language, so that everyone present understands what is being offered and why. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are invoked during the rite, and the pindas are offered with prayers for the peace of those who have passed away.

Tripindi and Narayan Nagbali: the difference

Families often ask about the Tripindi and Narayan Nagbali difference, because both are ancestral rites performed here. Broadly, Tripindi Shraddha is a one-day shraddha centred on ancestral offerings that may have lapsed. Narayan Nagbali is a longer rite, usually spread over three days, that tradition links with untimely deaths and with atonement connected to serpents. Families whose horoscope reading mentions Pitra Dosh also often look at the Pitra Dosh puja. If you are unsure which rite suits your family, you can talk it through with Guruji before deciding.

Who needs it

Tripindi Shraddha is not compulsory, and no one should feel pressured into it. Families usually consider it in situations such as these:

  • The yearly shraddha for a parent, grandparent or another elder has not been possible for several years.
  • The exact date of an ancestor's passing is unknown, or old family records are no longer available.
  • A relative passed away young or far from home, and the family is unsure whether all the customary rites were completed.
  • A family priest or astrologer has suggested an ancestral rite, and the family wishes to perform it calmly and properly.
  • Someone visiting Trimbakeshwar wishes to remember the last three generations of the family in a single rite.

Customs about who may sit as the performer differ between families and regions. Please describe your family situation when you enquire, so that Guruji can advise you. [TO VERIFY]

Life's difficulties can have many causes. For a health, legal or financial concern, please consult a qualified professional as well; this rite is a religious observance and does not replace their advice.

Procedure

  1. Date and family details

Guruji confirms a suitable date from the Panchang and notes the ancestors' names and family gotra, as far as these are known. You can enquire even if your family records are incomplete.

  2. Bath and preparation

Where time allows, the family bathes at Kushavarta Kund and then reaches the venue in clean traditional clothes. Guruji shares the venue and arrival time in advance.

  3. Sankalp

The performer formally states the purpose of the rite, naming the family, the gotra and the ancestors being remembered.

  4. Ganesh puja and invocation

The Tripindi Shraddha vidhi opens with prayers to Lord Ganesh, after which Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are invoked.

  5. Offering the three pindas

Three pindas, traditionally prepared with ingredients such as barley, rice and black sesame [TO VERIFY], are offered with mantras and prayers for the peace of the departed.

  6. Tarpan

Water mixed with sesame is offered to the ancestors while Guruji recites the mantras and the family joins in prayer.

  7. Closing prayers and dakshina

The rite ends with prayers for the family, the customary dakshina and prasad. Guruji also explains anything the family should observe afterwards.

Duration: 1 day

Benefits, as traditionally believed

  • Among the Tripindi Shraddha benefits described in tradition, the first is peace for ancestors whose yearly rites may have lapsed.
  • Traditionally seen as a way to remember and honour the last three generations of the family in a single rite.
  • Traditionally believed to invite the blessings of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh on the household.
  • In traditional astrology, associated with easing Pitra Dosh; this is a belief and not a promised result.
  • Traditionally believed to help a family fulfil a duty towards elders that may have gone unfinished.
  • Gives relatives a quiet occasion to remember elders by name and to pass the custom on to younger family members.

Why at Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar, a temple town near Nashik in Maharashtra, is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is known for the origin of the Godavari near Brahmagiri hill. Many pilgrims bathe at its sacred tank, Kushavarta Kund, before their rites. Tradition regards the town as a fitting place for ancestral offerings and for shanti rites, which is why families also come here for Narayan Nagbali and Kaal Sarp puja.

There is a symbolic link as well. The Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is revered as embodying Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, the same three deities invoked during Tripindi Shraddha. For many families, that connection makes the place especially meaningful.

Planning your visit

The rite is completed within a day, but arriving the evening before can help you avoid a rush. Start by checking suitable dates on the muhurat page, then contact Guruji. Guruji will then confirm the timing and venue with you.

Frequently asked questions

How is Tripindi Shraddha different from a yearly shraddha?

A yearly shraddha is usually offered on the death anniversary of a particular person. Tripindi Shraddha is a separate rite that remembers departed family members more broadly, which is why families often consider it when dates are unknown or yearly observances have lapsed.

What is the difference between Tripindi Shraddha and Narayan Nagbali?

Tripindi Shraddha is a one-day rite centred on three pindas and ancestral offerings that may have lapsed. Narayan Nagbali usually takes three days and is traditionally linked with untimely deaths and atonement connected to serpents. Guruji can help you understand which of them, if either, fits your family.

How much does Tripindi Shraddha cost at Trimbakeshwar?

Guruji gives the price on request, based on the date and your requirements. The listing is for an individual ceremony, including samagri and dakshina. Food, stay and travel are not included.

When can Tripindi Shraddha be performed?

The date is chosen from the Panchang. Pitru Paksha and Amavasya are traditionally considered suitable, though other dates may also be possible. Check the muhurat page and ask Guruji to confirm a date that suits your family.

What if we do not know our ancestors' names or gotra?

You can still enquire. Share whatever the family remembers, and Guruji will explain how the sankalp can be taken. Incomplete details about older generations are nothing unusual.

Does this rite guarantee relief from problems?

No. Tripindi Shraddha is a religious observance, and its benefits are described on this page as traditional beliefs, not promises. It does not replace medical, legal or financial advice, and we do not promise any particular outcome.
