What it is

A Pitra Dosh Puja Trimbakeshwar ceremony is a one-day rite in which a family remembers its departed ancestors and offers them water, food and prayer. Pitra means ancestors and dosh means a flaw or imbalance. The rite is traditionally believed to bring peace to those who have passed on and to help a family fulfil what it owes them.

The idea of owing something has old roots. Hindu scriptures speak of three debts every person carries, and one of them is pitru rin, the debt to the generations who gave us life. Shraddha and tarpan are the customary ways of honouring it. When these rites have lapsed for a long time, or when an astrologer reads a particular combination in the ninth house of a horoscope, people call the condition Pitra Dosh. Astrologers do not always read it the same way.

What the rite involves

This rite is also known as pitra dosh nivaran puja. It usually brings together three offerings:

  • Tarpan: water mixed with black sesame, offered in the names of the ancestors
  • Pind daan: balls of rice or flour, offered as symbolic food for the departed
  • Mantra and prayer: Vedic recitation led by Guruji, seeking peace for the ancestors and wellbeing for the family

The pitra dosh puja vidhi further down this page is an outline. Guruji sets the actual order after understanding your family's situation.

Related rites

Other rites for ancestors are also performed here. Tripindi Shraddha and Narayan Nagbali Puja have their own purposes, while Kaal Sarp Puja is linked with a different combination in the horoscope. Guruji can explain which one fits your situation.

Who needs it

No one is obliged to perform this rite, and you do not need a dosh reading to honour your ancestors. Families usually approach Guruji for one of these reasons:

  • An astrologer has read Pitra Dosh in a kundali and suggested a remedy
  • The yearly shraddha or tarpan for a parent or grandparent has lapsed for some years
  • A loved one has passed away and the family feels the last rites could not be completed as they wished
  • The family is going through a hard time and wants to turn to prayer and remembrance
  • Someone wishes to offer gratitude to their ancestors at a sacred place, perhaps during Pitru Paksha or on an Amavasya

A word about difficult times

Hardship has many causes, and a horoscope is only one lens some people use to understand it. Please see this puja as an act of faith that sits alongside practical help, not in place of it. For health, legal or financial concerns, keep consulting a qualified professional. There is no need to decide out of fear. Talk it over with your family and take your time.

Procedure

  1. Arrival and purification

Arrive at the time Guruji gives you, after a bath and in clean, simple clothes. The rite opens with a short purification that prepares the family and the place.

  2. Sankalp

Guruji guides you through the formal statement of intent, naming the person performing the rite, the family gotra and the purpose. This is why it helps to keep these details ready.

  3. Ganesh puja and invocation

As is customary, the rite begins with prayers to Lord Ganesh. A kalash is then set up and the deities are invoked.

  4. Pitru avahan

The ancestors are remembered by name and symbolically invited to receive the offerings. If some names are not known, tell Guruji beforehand.

  5. Tarpan

Water mixed with black sesame is offered through cupped hands while mantras are recited. This is the customary offering for the satisfaction of the ancestors.

  6. Pind daan

Balls of rice or flour are prepared and offered as symbolic food for the departed. Guruji then explains how they are respectfully immersed.

  7. Mantra recitation and havan

Vedic mantras are recited for the peace of the ancestors. Where the vidhi calls for it, a small havan is also performed.

  8. Closing prayers and daan

The rite ends with a request for forgiveness for any error, prayers for the family, and charity according to your means.

Why at Trimbakeshwar

The Godavari is traditionally said to rise on the Brahmagiri hills above the town, and Kushavarta Kund is revered as its sacred source. You can read more on the Trimbakeshwar temple page.

Rites for ancestors have long been tied to sacred rivers and places of pilgrimage, which is why families have come to Trimbakeshwar for them over the years. Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether Pitra Dosh is in my kundali?

It is read from the birth chart. Astrologers commonly look at the ninth house and the Sun, often together with Rahu or Saturn, and their readings can differ. Hardship in life does not by itself establish it. You can share your kundali with your astrologer or with Guruji when you enquire.

Will this puja solve my problems?

No one can honestly promise that. This is a religious act of remembrance, traditionally believed to bring peace to ancestors and blessings to the family. It carries no promise of any result in health, marriage, work or money, and it does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.

How long does it take, and which date is suitable?

The puja is planned as one day. The exact hours depend on the muhurat, and Guruji confirms them once your date is fixed. Amavasya and Pitru Paksha are traditionally favoured for ancestor rites, but they are not the only options. See the muhurat page or ask Guruji, and enquire early if you have particular dates in mind.

What is the pitru dosh puja cost?

The puja costs ₹3,100 for an individual ceremony of one day with one pandit, including samagri and dakshina. Food and stay are not included.

How is this different from Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi Shraddha?

All three concern ancestors, but they are chosen for different situations. Narayan Nagbali is a longer rite, traditionally linked with untimely death and with harm done to a snake. Tripindi Shraddha is traditionally associated with ancestors whose shraddha has been missed for several years. Pitra Dosh Puja is a one-day rite of remembrance and peace. Guruji can suggest what suits you after hearing your situation.

Can women and other family members take part?

Customs differ between families and regions, especially about who makes the offerings. Tell Guruji who will be coming and what your family usually follows, and Guruji will explain how each person can take part.
